Subject: Black History Month Spotlight: Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins

Dear Community,

Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins
Born: March 4, 1867 — Clarksville, Tennessee
Died: May 3, 1953 — Chicago, Illinois

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins, a true pioneer in American dentistry whose story is foundational to the dental profession and stem.

In 1890, Dr. Rollins became the first African American woman in the United States to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS), graduating from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Her journey into dentistry began as a teenager when she worked as a dental assistant. The dentists she worked under recognized her talent and determination and encouraged her to pursue formal dental education an extraordinary path at a time when both racial and gender barriers made higher education nearly inaccessible.

After earning her degree, Dr. Rollins opened a successful dental practice in Cincinnati where she became known for her clinical excellence and compassionate care. She later relocated to Chicago, continuing her work in communities where access to oral healthcare was limited. Her practice represented more than treatment it symbolized possibility and representation for Black families who had rarely seen themselves reflected in professional healthcare roles.

Dr. Rollins was also deeply committed to mentorship, civic engagement, and expanding opportunities for others. She actively encouraged young Black students to pursue professional careers and participated in organizations that advanced education and equity for African Americans and women.

Her legacy is not only defined by being “the first,” but by how she used her position to open doors for those who followed. She modeled resilience, service, and excellence in a profession that continues to benefit from the path she forged.

This Black History Month, we recognize Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins for paving the way and reminding us that representation in dentistry has a powerful history and an even more powerful future.

Sincerely,
Black Student Alliance

P.S. Fun Fact: The modern Home Security System was invented in 1966 by Marie Van Brittan Brown, a nurse who designed it to feel safer at home during late hours. Her design included cameras, monitors, and a remote door lock decades before smart doorbells and CCTV became common.
